Hong Kong, or simply H.K, is located on China’s south coast and is enclosed by the Pearl River Delta and the South China Sea. Hong Kong is renowned worldwide for its jungle of glass and stones and deep natural harbor. With a landmass

of 1,104 square kilometers (426 sq. mi) on which 7 million people stay, Hong Kong is the world’s most densely populated city.

Interesting facts:

The name ‘Hong Kong’ is Cantonese for ‘fragrance harbor’.

    • The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region consists of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, the New Territories, and several other smaller islands.
    • The Hong Kong’s Peak Tram became the first rail tram in Asia in 1888. About 11,000 people ride the tram every day translating into 4 million people annually.
    • The main languages (official) spoken in Hong Kong are Chinese Cantonese and English.
    • Unlike what many people think, about three-quarters of Hong Kong’s landmass is rural. It consists of 24 parks, woodlands, reservoirs, hills and a coastline. These beautiful parks are easily accessible from the city.
    • Hong Kong is one of the richest cities in the world. It has more Rolls Royce’s per person than any other city in the world.
    • Did you know that the father of fiber optics, the glass cables that have so significantly changed how we communicate is called Professor Charles Kao from Hong Kong? The professor is also a winner of the Physics Nobel Prize in 2009.
    • HK has more skyscrapers than any other city in the world. A skyscraper is any building with more than 14 stories. It has twice as many as its nearest rival – the New York City.
    • Since the Opium War of 1842 to July 1st, 1997, Hong Kong was under British Rule. Today, it is a special administrative region of China.

Cantonese is the local language of Hong Kong, but with many migrants from China also living, studying and working here, Mandarin (the most spoken language in the world) is also widely spoken. Speaking a second language looks great on your resume.

What are the documents needed to be scanned of the applicant which needed to be ready before apply?
To apply with CityU, essentially, students are required to submit the following documents:

1) The latest and/or the last 2 years of their academic transcripts;
2) Higher school certificate/ diploma
3) Public exam results (eg. IB, SAT I, GCSE ASL) (if any)
4) Personal statement;
5) Proof of English Proficiency
6) If a student is applying for the School of Creative Media, they are also required to submit a portfolio

How much time process to get the approval or the university acceptance?
Normally 3-5 weeks after submission. CityU has application 2 application deadlines, the first deadline tends to be in Nov and the regular deadline will be in Jan on the following year. obviously, the deadline is best but the University still accepts rolling applications and the review process will be around 4-6 weeks.

English-language Requirements (for applicants holding non-local qualifications)
Applicants who obtained their entrance qualifications in a language other than English will need to have achieved an acceptable result in an approved English language test. The following qualifications are accepted as proof of English-language proficiency
TOEFL Minimum total score of 79 in the Internet-based test (Only accepts internet-based scores from a single test date, not MyBest scores.)
IELTS Overall band score of 6.5 or above
SAT Minimum score of 590 in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing in new SAT
ACT Minimum score of 24 in both ACT English and ACT Reading (in one sitting)
GCE System One of the following :
Grade E or above in GCE AL/IAL or AS/IAS English Language, English Literature or English Language and Literature

Grade C/Grade 4 or above in GCSE/GCEOL English/English Language or English Literature

Grade C/Grade 4 or above in IGCSE First Language English, English Language or English Literature

Grade B/Grade 5 or above in IGCSE English as a Second Language

Scholarship

The City University of Hong Kong is offering applications for the Entrance Scholarship Scheme for foreign students with excellent academic performance.

This is the merit base award open to supporting international students who are admitted or plan to admit to full-time government-funded bachelor’s degree programs in Hong kong.

Eligibility

  • Eligible Countries: Application from all nationalities are welcome
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The sponsorship will be awarded in any subject offered by the university
  • Admissible Criteria: Applicants must be admitted to a full-time government-funded bachelor’s degree program
  • Supporting Documents: Applicants should present the original certificates/official certification of your qualifications as stated in your application (e.g. official transcripts, award certificates, English test results and official certified English translations where applicable) for verification before starting your studies.

Benefits

The Award Scheme will offer three types of grants as the following

  • Top Scholarships of HK$180,000 (approximately US$23,000), covering annual tuition fees, on-campus accommodation, and living expenses
  • Full tuition grants, covering annual tuition fees (approximately US$18,000)
  • Half tuition grants, covering half of the annual tuition fees (approximately US$9,000).

Note: Students are required to attain a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.2 or above every year during the period of study for renewing the award.

  • All non-local students admitted from underrepresented nationalities except Top Scholarship recipients will be eligible for the new grant.
  • Awardees will be required to engage in a volunteer activity to enhance internationalization
Outstanding Athletes Entrance Scholarship for Non-Local Students

CityU’s Student Development Services (SDS) is proud to offer the Student-Athletes Admission Scheme (SAAS) to non-local students athletes. The aim of the scheme is to provide opportunities for outstanding student athletes to study in CityU. Since the introduction of the scheme in 1997, more than 1,000 students with high sports performance standards have been admitted to the university’s degree programmes.

Through the provisions of scholarships, we hope to attract high performing international athletes to CityU and further enhance the performance of our sports teams.
